Sightseeing
Fifty years ago Benidorm was a small fishing village set against a backdrop of low, gentle mountains. Now it has a reputation for its never ending nightlife during the summer months. During the winter months, between October – April, Benidorm is mostly inhabited by retired couples.
Nestled in the Casco Antigua district of Benidorm are the ruins of a 14th century castle believed to have been built to keep away marauding Berber pirates. It is from here, from the castle’s ‘mirador’ or balcony that you’ll be able to get the best view of Benidorm’s spectacular sunsets. In translation, Benidorm’s two beaches, Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente, are sunset and sunrise.
Shoppers should be pleased to know that for superb bargains, Wednesday is market day in Benidorm, and on Sundays, the car boot sale (or “Rastro”) takes place by the town’s railway station. Out of town, Altea’s Tuesday market is worth visiting, but for a taste of the area’s chicest boutiques, a trip to nearby Alicante is a must.
A short distance from Benidorm is Terra Mitica, Spain’s most popular theme park, which is also the largest in the country. Here, the entire family will enjoy a vast array of entertainment, hair-raising rides, a massive choice of dining establishments, and shopping galore. The park’s newest attraction comes in the form of the Tizona, a terrifying roller coaster which travels inverted at death-defying 100 kpm speeds, and 100 ft. heights.

Mundomar Exotic Animal Park is a wonderful place for children, having a lovely children’s park, a galleon and a good number of dining choices. The park is also well known for its delightful animal shows, as well as the chance to see sea creatures like dolphins, sea lions and penguins up close. |
