Eating
There are excellent restaurants, bars and hotels on the lovely palm-lined esplanade of Altea.
Eating and drinking in Altea is best done on the seafront which is lined with many tapas bars, comfortable cafés, pizza and pasta restaurants along the pretty palm-lined esplanade. However, in the old town of Altea you will also find a wide variety of restaurants and bars ranging from Michelin starred ‘A la Carte’ to value-for-money ‘Menus del dia’.
The wide pebble beach of Altea, and its charming esplanade, stretches from L’Olla island to Albir. Within walking distance north of Altea at L’Olla you will find the favourite place for chiringuito bars which serve delicious paellas. Viennese coffee and cakes are served at the Ostereicher. For the younger generation San San is very popular.
Along the wall of the promenade, towards the centre of town, local artists will display their pictures on warm summer evenings, so as you take a stroll to find your perfect restaurant or bar for the evening, you can purchase paintings or even have a self-portrait done there and then!
The popular La Plaza bar is situated in the Plaza de la Inglesia church square in the Old Town where you will be delighted with the panoramic view over the Altea esplanade. If you choose to eat in the intimate old town house restaurant (just left from the church square) of El Negro it is advisable to book your table in advance. You will be offered, among many other delicious delicacies, a fine Argentinean steak. Nearby there are a profusion of other good restaurants, especially down Calle Major.
In common with most other towns in the area, Altea has a weekly street market where you will be able to purchase many different varieties of food.
